Nokia’s Big Ambitions

Nokia has unveiled six new devices, including two phablets, during its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi – just days after it was reported that its Lumia sales have hit a record high. Over the past few months there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding the event, which is likely to be remembered as the Finnish firm’s last major soirée before it completes the sale of its hardware unit to Microsoft.

Nokia’s Latest Lumia Devices

The manufacturer showed off the Nokia Lumia 1520, formerly codenamed the Bandit, and the more affordable Lumia 1320, previously known as Batman. Both phablets feature six-inch displays which completely changes the way the Windows Phone operating system looks, allowing for a third column of LiveTiles on the home screen.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the leading Windows Phone phablet, set to rival the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, HTC One max and Sony Xperia Z1.

Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO, said:

“Today I would like to share with you how our Lumia portfolio continues to grow, not just in numbers, but actually in size. We have boosted the screen to a full 6-inches; colours are rich and true. The Lumia 1520 offers a brilliant imaging experience.”

Featuring a six-inch 1080p display with a screen resolution of 368ppi, it’s instantly clear that Nokia means business. Also on board is a 20 megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage expandable via a microSD card, 3400mAh battery and 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor – the first of its kind to be integrated into a Windows Phone.

Taking design cues from the Lumia 1020, the phablet is impressively slender at just 8.7mm, although it tips the scales at 209g, making it pretty heavy in the hand and pocket.

On the software side of things the Lumia 1520 runs Windows Phone 8 with something extra called Lumia Black. This includes all the latest software enhancements from both Nokia and Microsoft such as Nokia HERE Drive+ with free global turn-by-turn navigation, the new Nokia Camera app and Nokia Storyteller app. There’s also Microsoft’s new suite of Bing apps and customised ringtones for individual contacts.

Lumia 1520 Hands-On

The Lumia Black update will be available for other Lumia devices at the beginning of 2014.

Although the 720p display on the Lumia 1320 isn’t quite as impressive as that seen on the Lumia 1520, it’s certainly the headline grabbing feature of this low-end smartphone.

The rest of its spec sheet is comparable to the Lumia 652. Under the hood there’s a 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage expandable via a microSD card, a 3400mAh battery and 4G connectivity.

When it comes to the camera department the Lumia 1320’s 5 megapixel offering lags way behind the Lumia 1520. There’s no Optical Image Stabilisation or Zeiss optics, but there’s lots of Nokia’s Smart Camera software on board, and the company claims it will shoot 1080p video.

Hands-On with The Lumia 1320

Its removable rear cover also comes in orange, yellow, black and white, a colourful addition which has become synonymous with the Nokia Lumia family. The plastic chassis is however rather chunky at almost 10mm thick, and even heavier than the Lumia 1520 at a weighty 220g.

The rest of the line up

As well as a new tablet, which goes by the name of the Lumia 2520, Nokia has also added three models to its Asha range of low-end handsets, targeted at emerging smartphone markets and shoppers on a budget.

Nokia Asha Phones

Instead of running Windows Phone OS they come with Nokia’s proprietary Series 40 software. The most expensive of the trio is the Asha 530 which supports 3G data rather than 2G, allowing for faster internet access.

Lucrative Lumia

The devices have certainly come at a good time for the company following reports that its Lumia sales soared during the fourth consecutive quarter – claims suggest that almost eight million Windows Phones were sold between July and September. Nokia is due to announce its official figures later this month, so it will be much clearer to see the progress the company has made of late.

While Nokia still has some way to go before witnessing the success seen by the likes of Samsung, the Finnish manufacturer’s latest Lumias prove Nokia and the Windows Phone platform still have a place in the burgeoning mobile market.
